Private William Logan

 

This North Irish Horseman appears to be the William Herdman Logan born on 30 January 1897 at 83 Upper Canning Street, Belfast, the only child of mariner James Logan and his wife Annie (née Logan). After his mother died when he was just three years old, he was raised on the farm of his grandmother Susan Logan at Knockagh, Carrickfergus, County Antrim. At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Knockagh with his grandmother and a cousin.

Logan enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 29 January and 12 April 1917 (regimental number between 2384 and 2389 – later Corps of Hussars No.71791). In January 1918 he embarked for Egypt with a draft of North Irish Horsemen from the Antrim camp. There he was attached to the 1/1st Nottinghamshire Yeomanry (Sherwood Rangers). He was still serving as late as January 1920.

At some point after the war Logan moved to England. At the time of the 1939 Register he was living at Newlyn Road, Westminster, and working as a director in textile printing.
